Experience

I am what the sign language community calls a CODA (child of a Deaf adult). Born into the Deaf community via two Deaf parents as a hearing individual, sign language is my first language. (I learned “correct” English much later). In the past, I have worked with entities such as the Alabama School for the Deaf, Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, E.H. Gentry Technical Facility, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, The United States Postal Service, National American Miss, and more. I have been teaching sign language for over 19 years and have a lifetime of experience in the world of Deaf culture, sign language, and interpreting.

Hobbies

Growing up as a CODA, I saw my Deaf parents experience discrimination and oppression. I realized that the primary reason that my parents experienced this is that there was a lack of knowledge about Deaf culture. My mission is to educate people and entities that being Deaf is not a disability, it is a lifestyle. As a result, I started Behind the Signs to assist in bridging the communication gap between the Deaf and Hearing communities. There are over 70 million Deaf people in the world...and probably more that are unaccounted for! In doing so, I have found that sign language learning has been shown to improve brain function, increase creative ability, and improve memory. As a visual language, sign language improves spatial awareness, reaction time, and concentration ability.
